China. Total 2019/20 production is estimated to be about the same as that of the previous year, between 15 and 15.7 million metric tons, while the total output in 2020/21 is forecasted at over 17.8 million tons.

During 2019, with virtually no carry-over stock of edible peanuts from the previous year (most of the 2018/19 production was sold before the 2019 Spring Festival), farmers’ markets have run out of supplies and were waiting for new product. Many small and medium-sized oil factories, traders
and export enterprises failed to fulfill a considerable number of contracts in the first half of 2019 due to soaring prices and shortage of goods, which delayed the execution until the autumn when the new supply came in.

Since mid-March 2020, after the Spring Festival, with the liberalization of traffic control in various regions, buyers have been urgently replenishing stock. Peanut prices in the major production areas have soared all the way up to a peak in early April (second record price after the maximum of the 2012 spring), mainly due to the tight supply and market speculation.

Peanut consumption is expected to be curbed this summer due to high prices and the COVID-19 outbreak effects. Nonetheless, edible oil consumption was impacted differently: although the overall operation of the catering industry has been hit hard by the pandemic, as the majority of consumers were eating at home, consumption of high-end oil products such as brand peanut oil increased. Nevertheless, due to the high peanut prices in 2019/20, farmers are highly motivated to sell and the amount of self-squeezing and selfconsumption is reduced.

USA. Current scenario of peanuts focuses now in the consumer behavior regarding the appearance of the COVID-19 Pandemic, which will determine the trend for the second half of 2020.

USA has been struggling with a 2019 crop with quality problems and unable to be present in the international market. New crop 2020 early estimation shows a much-needed increase. Many in the industry believe that planted acreage will be higher than the USDA's March estimate.

Argentina. As reported by the Argentine Peanut Chamber (CAM) the weather conditions during the 2019/20 season have been very good, so the overall quality is optimal. With 351,214 hectares harvested, total production is projected at 884,708 tons of peanuts in grain (1.263 million MT of in-shell peanuts). Similar to the last season, yields are estimated at 2.52 MT/ha in grain. However, with a drop of 9.5% in the harvested area, exportable offer has been reduced from 663,760 MT (in grain) to 580,058 MT compared to last year.

Brazil. After a very bad 2018/19 crop, Brazil has collected a good crop not only in volume, but in quality as well. Although availability of good material would be limited given the number of contracts postponed from one crop the following one. All in all, and owing to the good crops in Argentina and
Brazil, industry sources anticipate that there will be enough peanut to supply the market in 2020 for snacking peanuts quality.
