China. Due to the frost damage during the blossom period in some of the northern growing regions, 2020/2021 crop is forecast 5% lower from last year, at 950,000 metric tons (in-shell basis). The market proved to be active during the early part of the season, overseas shipments for the current crop have been strong for both in-shell and shelled, resulting in an increase of 266% and 279% respectively, from September 2019 to March 2020. However, it declined over the peak selling season of the Spring Festival, which was unfortunately missed, due to the long quarantine related to the outbreak of the COVID–19 virus. This has also resulted in a larger than normal inventory with sluggish demand.
USA. Although it is too early to describe the California crop and the official estimate is expected on August 28, 2020, according to industry sources, a record crop is anticipated. As per the California Walnut Board and Commission, shipments in the US have been strong, as well as in Germany, Spain, and Japan, however, impacts from COVID-19 have caused market disruptions that appear to be leveling off as countries emerge from lockdown and shelter in place restrictions. Consumer consumption remained strong in Turkey for Ramadan and throughout most markets as walnuts are known for their contribution to a healthy diet. Through the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond, the California walnut industry continues its commitment to producing high-quality, nutritious and safe walnuts for consumers at home and abroad.
Chile. The 2019/20 crop is estimated at 130,000 MT, 7% below last year. Although drought continue to be concern, a record crop of around 140,000-150,000 MT is expected for 2020/21.
