Hazelnuts

Turkey. Crop 2019/2020, estimated at 790,000 metric tons (in-shell basis), was the second largest crop in history, after the 2008/09 production of over 800,000 MT. Correlatively, total exports for the season also reached the record in-shell equivalent of 660,000 MT with a revenue of US$2.3 billion.
This season, according to industry sources, a good-quality medium crop, forecasted at 620,000 MT, is anticipated. At the time of writing this report, harvest was expected to be carried out normally, starting at the beginning of August through mid- September. COVID-19 restrictions to migrant’s workers mobility was also expected to be lifted by then.
Italy. Last season’s exceptional low harvest created optimal conditions for an abundant production in 2020, forecasted at 135,000 MT (in-shell basis). Last year production of male and female flower buds translated into a very good flowering and fruit setting. After a very hot and dry month of May, weather in June has been almost perfect, not too hot (max. 23°C) and with abundant rains over almost the entire Italian peninsula, favoring kernel development and avoiding shriveled and small nuts.
Furthermore, due to the new plantations recently developed, the total area under plantation has reached around 80,000 hectares, not only in the three main districts (Piedmont, Lazio and Campania) but also in minor regions such as Veneto, Marche, Umbria, Tuscany, Apulia and Sicily. The potential output in full production equivalent to 160,000 MT is to be reached within the next five years.
USA. According to Hazelnut Industry Office of Oregon and industry sources, in regards to shipments during Q1 and Q2 thus far, certainly the COVID-19 situation impacted primarily export of in-shell into China. However, and in spite of this, demand for hazelnut kernels at steady prices is still present. A reasonable level of carry-in is expected to prepare for a record size crop in Oregon for 2020.
