Vietnam and Cambodia had bumper crops due to very favorable weather conditions. The Indian crop is lower, especially in the western region due to climatic reasons. West African crop collection, trading and shipments are affected by COVID-19 related disruptions and poor flowering in some regions of the Ivory Coast. The inadequate post-harvest facilities in West Africa combined with the slow shipments has also resulted in lower kernel yields. Total availability of kernels overall expected to be slightly less than in 2019.

Indian processing capacity was also reduced up to June due to COVID-19 related restrictions, while processing in Vietnam did very well during this period. The slow shipments from West Africa may affect processing capacity utilization in the next few months.

Demand was very good in the EU and the US in March and April, with pantry-stocking at the beginning of the pandemic. The growth has tapered down to lower levels since May. Higher retail sales have made up for decreases in the food service sector.

In India, the usage of broken cashews (splits and pieces) fell significantly due to the sweet (Mithai) shops being closed. Demand has now partly picked up after the lockdown was partially eased and businesses have started functioning. Middle Eastern demand was severely affected due to the Mecca pilgrimage being called off during Ramadan, in addition to the COVID-19 restrictions and the collapse in petroleum prices.

Overall, the demand for whole cashews has held up, but there has been a stock build-up of broken cashews. The healthy connotation of nuts is supporting demand, but restrictions have affected some usage avenues and occasions. It is difficult to predict demand in the face of uncertainty about the further direction of the pandemic and government responses, but at the time of writing this report most markets seem to be going towards normalcy.
