USA. The May 2020 Almond Board of California Position Report was published on June 11, 2020 reporting Crop Year 2019/2020 receipts of 2.536 billion lbs. (approx. 1.128 million metric tons) year-to-date (YTD). The 2019/20 crop is the largest crop on record and USDA receipts show an average inedible reject percentage of 1.65%, which is slightly lower than the 2018/2019 crop, demonstrating improved conditions and efforts made by growers to minimize insect damage during the growing season. Total shipments YTD through May are up 3.72% from 2018/19 at 2.017 billion lbs (914,855 MT), and with commitments (tonnage sold but not shipped) tracking 26% ahead of last year, July ending inventory should be minimally adequate. Domestic shipments YTD through May increased 4% from last crop year to 648 million lbs. (294,200 MT). Exports are up 3.5% over the same time period. All marketing regions
show consistent year-over-year growth in shipments with the exception of the Asia-Pacific region. USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) published the 2020 Subjective Production Forecast on May 12, which estimates the 2020 U.S. almond crop at around 3.0 billion pounds. Excellent weather during bloom and lack of frost conditions lead to the reporting by growers of higher than average yields. The 2020 NASS Objective Estimate will be published on July 7th.
Australia. The 2020 crop has been harvested with the preharvest estimate of 106,000 MT appearing to be accurate. There was some disruption from rain, but fortunately most of the Nonpareil crop was in storage before this occurred. The pollinator varieties stand up to rain events very well and so the overall quality of this year’s crop is very good from a color perspective though the volume in smaller sizes is higher than last year. Sales have been strong. With the pandemic, the focus on family wellbeing has been beneficial to sales of foods in Australia such as almonds that are known to have wide ranging health benefits.
The dry period in southern Australia appears to be ending with good rains over the catchment area for Murray river water storages and with the wetter weather prediction for winter, the availability of water for the 2020/21 crop should see some cost relief for this key production input. The improved weather in terms of rain has also benefited floral resources for beekeepers, that have endured a challenging period with drought and bushfires that have destroyed hives and sites on public lands.
Spain. According to the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture, total almond area under planting in 2020 amounts to 687,225 hectares, 85% under rainfed and 15% under irrigation. Bearing area adds up to 615,912 ha, from which 28,922 ha will be harvested for the first time this season and 133,786 ha account for organic production. Based on this planted area, AEOFRUSE (Spanish Association of Almond Growers Organizations) and DESCALMENDRA (Spanish Almond Shellers Association) have jointly estimated the 2020 crop at 115,633 MT. The organic crop is estimated at 15,000 MT. Several factors contributed to this important increase in production:
• The irrigated crop already represents about 55% of the production.
• Very good weather conditions were conducive to optimal bloom and pollination.
• Unlike last year, no significant frost damages were recorded this season.
• A very rainy month of April favored trees to develop nuts, especially in the rainfed farming areas.
• New varieties are more productive than the traditional ones.
